I think we can all agree that there is nothing sweeter than a baby.
Jesus birth is the most famous and beloved stories of all time. The joy that was evident at the arrival of the Son of God would be beyond anything we could imagine. God came down to save us in the form of a sweet baby boy. He would grow up to greatness.
But the passage that often sticks with me is when Jesus is brought to the temple to be blessed and Simeon tells His mother, Mary, that a sword will pierce her soul.
This might not be the most reassuring blessing to a young mother.
But Simeon saw the end at the beginning and He wanted to remind Mary that Jesus was God’s son sent to save the world. A Savior.
Mary knew that there would be good days and bad days. Most mothers already know this. Mary’s knowledge though was even more important since her son’s future would save His people by sacrificing His life. World without end. Amen.
Thank you Lord Jesus for blessing us this Christmas with the reminder of the love you showed to us in your life, your love, and your never-ending grace.
We are blessed beyond measure. We are blessed for eternity.
Luke 2:25-35
Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss your servant in peace.
For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”
The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
