Humming the Hymns

I’m in a hymn mood today. Pandora allows me to set up a music channel that only plays hymns of faith. For me, hymns are more relaxing than any “zen” type music on the market.

Today…I’m ready to hum to the hymns.

So much thought went into the old standards and I love to listen to the songs that have been sung for centuries. It takes me back to a life-long love with Christian music and with singing. I love the new contemporary melodies as well but the old hymns take me home. They are magical.

Growing up my favorite Sunday was the fifth Sunday of any month. On fifth Sundays in the Baptist church we had an evening where we could pick out favorite songs and sing a few stanzas with the congregation. My Dad and I took great pains to try to stump the Baptists and pick obscure hymns. Believe me…my Dad knew them all. But it is pretty difficult to stump a hard core group of believers who also love these precious tunes.

Faith passed from generation to generation through soul-filled melodies…what is more perfect than that?

My hope is built on nothing less.

God Chimes In

chimes

There are few things as soothing and peaceful as the wind blowing through glass chimes. I must have over fifteen in my yard and I still don’t think it’s enough. They serenade me night and day.

I have been fascinated by wind chimes my entire life starting with my grandmother and mother who loved to hear their cheery symphonic sounds. Like the softness of a bird’s song, a wind chime creates the loveliest melodies without effort and using only the slightest blush of wind.

I like to think of my life the same way. I move through this world and I share sweet-sounding words which hopefully are pleasant and kind and pleasing to the ear. A soft word, a kind comment and when needed, a breath of condolence.

We often repeat…”Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace” and I believe it to be so. Let us be soothing, comforting and melodious as we share the love of Christ with those we meet.

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” John 3:8
