Life’s Storms

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Mark 4:35-41

God’s voice in the trees…

I hear the trees.

In the mountains, our home is surrounded by the lush green foliage of pines, oaks, maples and elms. As the wind picks up speed, the trees rustle and move as though God has breathed a sigh and all of nature quivers with joy.

There is a special peace that comes when I take the time to sit and wait for nature’s call to my soul. Absent the cacophonus sounds of city life, there is the melodious chorus of birds, crickets, and the subtle flap of a hummingbird’s wings.

For a minute, my soul is calm and refreshed.

For a minute God speaks and calls to me.

I feel the presence of God and know that love surrounds me. It is the same for you. It only requires a willingness to listen.

Be still and know that He is God.

Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Psalm 96:12

I’m walking on sunshine

I don’t know what heaven looks like and I wouldn’t even venture a guess. The Bible gives us some idea, but really…I think it will be more awe-inspiring than any written word can accurately describe. It is simply beyond our human ability to comprehend.

Today I had a rare opportunity to spend some quiet time of reflection while gazing at the ocean. In my heaven, time and tide will be no more with the never-ending calm of perfect heavenly creation. We will gaze at beautiful things and beloved loved ones who are bathed with the glow of glory and grace.

The ocean calls to me as the waves and the tides work together to create a melodious harmony of sound that calms the senses and soothes the weary soul. For a bliss-filled moment, I’m in heaven…

…and I’m happy. I am filled with a sense of peace. I’m walking on sunshine.

So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:21

A whisper in the wind…

I like a breeze. A natural breeze, not a fan or air conditioning, but the breeze of nature. A light breeze that refreshes.

When I watch the storm clouds roll in the sky, which happens with regular frequency in Florida, I feel the breeze before the storm. It’s a heady experience to sit and watch as the clouds billow over and the breeze starts to pick up swirling and churning the skies. It’s a warning or a reminder…I’m not sure which. But I know that God is not far away and is powerful.

Maybe that’s how God speaks to us sometimes. I feel a the wisp of air on my neck and it reminds me that I need some time with God in prayer. I feel a whisper and I know that I need to be still and wait for the storm to calm. I sense a breeze in my mind and I am renewed. My thoughts become clear.

I stand still and I let that feeling wash over me and I am calm. I am refreshed. I remember.

God is not far away…

He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow. Psalm 147:18 (NIV)
